Birnbaum of Tawas City and formerly of Saginaw, left his mortal body for heavenly rest on Friday, May 27, 2016 at Covenant-Cooper, Saginaw, at age 86. Charles “Chaz” was born June 12, 1929 in Saginaw to Charles F. and Marie (Young) Birnbaum. He attended Arthur Hill High School in Saginaw and in 1947 joined the Air Force, serving during the Korean Conflict and spending two and a half hears in Hawaii. Charles was employed by Western Electric as an installer and retired with 39 years of service in 1992. He then moved to Tawas City. In 1958, Charles married Shirley Luitje, the mother of his sons, Bradley and Steven Birnbaum. On Aug. 16, 1969, he married his loving and devoted wife, Patricia A. Arndt, who survives him. Charles was a lifetime Pioneer member, CWA member, a member of the Huron Shores Genealogical Society, a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Tawas and a past member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Saginaw. He spent the last several years researching his family history and amassed an extensive collection that future generations will benefit from. Charles’ great grandparents moved to the Tawas area in 1870 and while doing his research he found he could trace relationships to most of the area families. He also enjoyed bowling, traveling, wood-working, gardening and telling great stories. Surviving besides his wife, Patricia, are two sons, Bradley Birnbaum and Steven Birnbaum, both of Oklahoma; daughter, Vicki Ann (Mark) Begick of Bay City; grandson, Bradley (Bridgette) Birnbaum of California; granddaughter, Marie Birnbaum of Oklahoma; grandson, Charlie Begick of Bay City; and great granddaughter, Haileigh Birnbaum of California; brother-in-law, Jerry Dorcey of Saginaw; sisters-in-law Shelley Birnbaum of Alma and Alva Birnbaum of Florida; many special nieces and nephews and exchange student “daughter” from Finland, Lotta Sillanpaa. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Jerry and James Birnbaum; sisters, Jacqueline White, Rita Miller and Ardath Dorcey; half-brother, Howland Ferguson; half-sisters, Lou Donn Endres and Elaine Wolpert; and brother-in-law, Don Miller. Per his wishes, cremation has taken place and no service is planned.

Notes on Death:  Sunday, September 28, 2003: BANGOR TOWNSHIP – John Gerard Rozek, of Saginaw, shot his wife, Terri Marie Rozek, outside her parents’ home on Shillair Drive at 1:41 p.m. Sunday, reports the Bay County Sheriff’s Office. Terri Rozek was staying with her parents because of marital difficulties, said Sgt. Jim Chlebowski. Divorce papers had recently been served, he said. John Rozek arrived at Terri Rozek’s parents’ house to pick up their children for an outing. When he arrived, he asked Terri Rozek to come out of the house to talk with him. “So she did,” Chlebowski said. “They went to where his truck was parked just north of the house. He opened up the tonneau cover where he had a loaded shotgun and emptied the weapon in her.” John Rozek then ran a short way down the one-way street, reloaded his weapon and shot himself in the head, Chlebowski said. Deputies from the Bay County Sheriff’s Office and troopers from the Michigan State Police at the Bay City Post responded to the shootings. John Rozek was dead at the scene. Terri Rozek survived for a short time but died on the way to the hospital, Chlebowski said. Several neighbors and children who were playing outside saw the confrontation, Chlebowski said. From information found among his personal effects, John Rozek is believed to have been receiving mental health counseling, Chlebowski said. Deputies continue to investigate where John Rozek might have received that counseling and whether he had a history of committing acts of violence. The gun used in the incident, a 12-gauge Mossberg Pump that holds six rounds, is believed to have been legally purchased the same day, Chlebowski said.  “There was planning here. He buys a gun the same day and has it loaded,” Chlebowski said. “It was all planned on his part.”
