Flood Lineage

History of the Surname Flood

The name Flood is a translation from the Irish Gaelic name, O Maoltuile or Mac Maoltuile, abbreviated to Mac An’Tuile (Mac = son of; An (later became O’)= the; Tuile=flood)and was first mentioned in Irish history in the 1100’s. Part of the family changed the original Irish name to the English translation, Flood, while others became Tully. Tuile means flood but is likely for toile, gen. of toil, will, i.e., the will of God. In parts of Ulster, Flood is used for the Welsh “Floyd”. The coat of Arms is labeled Mac an Tuile.

1. JAMES1 FLOOD was born 1768 in County Donegal, Ireland, and died 04 Feb 1842 in Hemmingford, Huntingdon Co., Quebec. He married ELIZABETH (BETSY) WOODWARD Abt. 1805 in Ireland. In researching the names Flood and Woodward with the aid of the Ulster Historical Foundation, it is most likely that these two families lived in Parish Drumhome, or Parish Donegal where the names coincide in tandem for many years. Due to the lack of records in Ulster, there is no proof of birth, baptisms, death or marriages.

Notes for JAMES FLOOD: Search of the 1800 Act of Union petition located two entries for Flood in the parish of Convoy and the townland was Lettermor(e). The names of the signatories are James Flood and John Flood. There was one further Flood entry in the parish of Killaghtee. In this same source there were two entries for the surname Woodward, one related to a J. Woodward and the other to a Thomas Woodward, both of Raphoe parish.
