The baptism register indicates that Amalia was born at 12:30 a.m., but does not give the year of birth or baptism; using the other dates on the page, 1880 or 1881 is most likely. His occupations are given as car inspector in one instance and com. lab. in another. At the time of his first marriage, Zion’s marriage register lists Hermann as “arbeiter” (worker).

Notes for Elsie Birnbaum: According to Ruth Birnbaum Smith, in an undated note, Elsie Birnbaum died “out west” during “..a diptheria scare.” Since the time was about 1918, Elsie probably was one of the many victims of the flu epidemic of that period. Ruth Birnbaum Smith, in the same note, stated that Elsie had three children, which seems considerable for a person of her estimated age of 18 or 19 at her death. Recent data (6/12/95) tends to suggest that the above contains considerable truth. Elsie very likely had two daughters and one son — and had certainly died before Jan., 1920, Census when her children were in the Saginaw orphanage. Her youngest child, Henrietta, was born in Colorado, according to the Census, probably about 1917-1918. SEE “More About Henrietta Birnbaum – Notes.” Baptismal Records of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Saginaw, MI, indicate that Elsa Wilhelmine Hulda (Hilda?), daughter of Theodore Birnbaum and Anna  Lange, was born on 9 June 1897; however, Charles Birnbaum’s Family Group Chart shows her birthday as 5/9/1895. She was listed as a housewife on her death certificate, which listed cause of death as Peritonitis from perforating typhoid ulcer; her husband’s address was given as the McClelland Orphanage on the same death record. Notes for Henrietta Felten: Henrietta Felten and two other children – Mildred and Frederick Felten – lost their mother when they were very young. On Jan. 9, 1920, these three children appeared in the 1920 census (1) as residents of the “Home for the Friendless” in Saginaw, MI. Henrietta was about one year old at this time. They were subsequently placed in the care of an aunt and uncle in Saginaw, Christian and Walberga Felten.(2) Henrietta’s father, Henry, also lived with his children and brother Christian at 1010 State St., Saginaw, in 1934. (3)About 1934-1936, Henrietta, who was about 15-16 years old at the time, disappeared, never to be seen nor heard from again, thus becoming a bit of a family “legend.” Although family stories perpetuate the myth that Henrietta was stolen into the “white slave trade” (euphemism for organized prostitution ring?), it is known that her aunt Walberga was very strict and that her disappearance did not generate any newspaper stories. A more logical theory is that she ran off, or was lured away, by a neighborhood man, Sidney A. Raymond, who lived on the corner at 1002 State St.; this man, sec. treas. of Universal Water Purifier, Inc., Saginaw, disappeared from the City Directory in 1937 as did his company.

Notes for Dorthea (Doris) Katherine Birnbaum: Dorthea’s name, according to her daughter Leatrice (Lee) is variously listed as Doris, Dora or Dorthea (communication, 5/31/95). According to Charles Birnbaum, in a June, 1995, phone call, to this researcher, Dorthea/Doris’ first husband – Clarence James – was a relative (brother or cousin) of Jesse James. Since Jesse had no brother named Clarence and since it is geographically unlikely that this James family went to Texas, where Clarence was probably born, this is quite unlikely. It has not been possible to verify any relation- ship to the infamous James family. It is certain, however, according to a Saginaw County death record, that Dorthea Katherine Birnbaum had an infant girl, Ruth Evelyn James, born in Michigan on May 4, 1919, and that Clarence James was listed as the father; this child died on Feb. 9, 1920, in Carrollton Twp (near Saginaw), MI, of pneumonia at the age of 9 months. The State of Texas had no marriage records for Clarence James and Dorthea Katherine Birnbaum for the period of 1918-1920. On March 23, 1913, Dora was baptized at St. John Ev. Lutheran Church, Saginaw, MI. (See See letter, dated Mar. 29, 1980, from St. John Church, Federal St., Saginaw, MI, copies in possession of Charles R. Birnbaum and Grace L. Stevens.
