Notes: Relatives state that originally, the family came from South Carolina to Elberton. They took the Charity Ferry over the (Old) Savannah River, (which is currently Hartwell Lake due to the building of a dam). They settled in Middleton, (and Elberton), Elbert Co. They were predominantly farmers (cotton) and George worked as a railroad man/pumper for the Seaboard Airline Railroad (S.A.L.). The family was Methodist, (Bethel Methodist Church) although the Ashworths and Powells were Baptist and attended Rock Branch Baptist Church.
When George worked for the railroad, George Longstreet Stalnaker, a member of another Stalnaker family (relationship to his mother and stepmother, both Stalnakers, is unknown at this time) worked as a car builder for the railroad – and George’s younger (step) sister Victoria married him.

Notes for Thomas Osborne MARTIN: Thomas worked for the railroad as a young man. During the building of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad during the 1920’s, he left Georgia for Florida to work. In 1927 he met and married his first wife Lilliam Stanford in Hillsborough Co., Tampa, Florida. They separated and he moved to Michigan. They divorced. In the late 1920’s, Thomas boarded with the Wiltse family. He met and married Mella Wiltse. He first worked the Saginaw Foundry. He didn’t like the conditions there, so he found a job with the City of Saginaw street maintenance department. He worked his way up to the position of supervisor of East Side Saginaw. It was his responsibility to make sure the streets were maintained in the summer and plowed in the winter. Notes for Mella Marie WILTSE: Mella was quite talented as an artist, although she did her painting for personal enjoyment.

OBITUARY: Daisy Herring. Daisy Martin Fortson Herring, 93, of Elberton died March 31, 2002, at Elbert Memorial Hospital. A native of Elbert County, she was a daughter of the late George W. Martin and Amanda Ashworth Martin. She was retired from Almar Manufacturing Company and a member of the Elberton First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Harry Bruce Fortson; her second husband, V.G. Herring; a son, Joe Bruce Fortson; a brother, Tom Martin; and a sister, Mamie M. Crenshaw. Survivors include a daughter, Betty H. Lester of Elberton; two sisters, Rebecca M. Bond and Janie M. Anderson, both of Elberton; a brother, Bill Martin of Arcadia, Fla.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the chapel of Berry Funeral Home with the Revs. Craig Brogdon and Gary Purvis officiating. Burial was in Forest Hills Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Michael Rutherford, William Rutherford, John Andrews, Gary Fortson, Jason Baker and Ryan Baker. Berry Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Betty loved her family, gardening, any kind of needlework and she loved china painting with her best friend, Martha Wells. She was a member of First Baptist Church and was a member of Iota Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi for sixty-six years. Born in Elberton, GA he was a son of Beverly Allen Bond and the late Thomas Raymond Bond. Steve was a member of Belin United Methodist Church in Murrells Inlet. He was President of Nu‐Idea in Sumter, SC. A 1980 graduate of Clemson University, with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management, Steve played golf at Clemson under Coach Bobby Robinson. Since his time as a Tiger golfer, Steve has loyally supported Clemson University, Clemson Athletics and the Clemson golf program. He was co‐chair of the Clemson Athletic Department Golf Committee and was instrumental in the development of the Clemson Golf Paws initiative. He loved the outdoors, golfing in Highlands, NC and along the SC coast, saltwater fishing in the low country and gardening. Most of all he loved his wife Margaret of 30 years and trusted God’s plan. Surviving are his wife, Margaret of Georgetown; his mother, Beverly of Elberton, GA.; his grandmother, Rebecca Bond of Elberton, Ga.; one sister Lauren Royston and husband Ronnie of Royston, GA; one brother David Fredrick Bond of Elberton, Ga. and many cherished nieces and nephews. OBITUARY: Evelyn Jean Anderson Snellings, 85, of Middleton, went to her eternal home to be with our Lord on Saturday, February 1, 2020, at her residence. A native of Elbert County, she was born on September 27, 1934, daughter of the late Gaines T. and Millie Jane Martin Anderson. She was the wife to the late Charles Ward Snellings, Sr. and they celebrated 61 years of marriage. She was a member of Middleton United Methodist Church and attended regularly until the last year of her life. She loved her church and church family. She was a graduate of Elberton High School and former owner of the Quick Stop. She retired in 2007 to travel and spend time with her family and found huge joy in being with her six great-grandchildren. They adored their Ma-Ma and loved getting hugs from her on their weekly visits. She also delighted in telling them secrets just to see how long they could keep them. Miss Evelyn, as she was affectionately known to all her friends at the Quick Stop, loved people. Her friendly smile greeted all of her customers every day. Young and old alike share a lifetime of memories with her. She had a huge heart and was always willing to help anyone she could. She and her husband, Charles, built the business in 1977 and she retired in 2007 after selling it. 30 years of making memories with people she loved, an Elbert County angel has left us. Survivors include her children: Diane Snellings Culpepper (Mike), Rhonda Snellings Graham (Alfred) and Charles Snellings, Jr. She had seven grandchildren: Tia Emery, Lance Johnson( Kelly), Landon Johnson (Brooke), Brandon, Brent, and Blake Eaves, and Charles W. Snellings, III; and six great-grandchildren: Aidan and Evan Emery, Layton, Lyla Kate, and Linkin Johnson, and Lawton Johnson. She is also survived by three brothers: Bill Anderson, David Anderson, and Ray Anderson. Besides her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by her only sister, Fay Cheek in 1985. Funeral services celebrating her life will be held on Tuesday, February 4 at 2:00pm at First United Methodist Church, Elberton. Interment will follow in Middleton United Methodist Church Cemetery.

OBITUARY: Susan Martin Earnhart, a resident of Maxwell AFB, Montgomery, Ala., formerly of Aiken, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at the age of 48. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Aiken Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Earnhart was a critical care registered nurse and honorably served her country in the U.S. Air Force. She was preceded in death by her father, Albert Martin. She is survived by her husband of 23 years, George Earnhart III, Maxwell AFB, Montgomery, Ala.; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Dana Gregory, Aiken, Eric and Melinda McCarty, Baton Rouge, La.; one granddaughter, Leah McCarty; her mother, Carolyn Martin, Aiken; three brothers, Divver Martin, Charleston, Donald (Brenda) Martin, Columbia and Danny Martin, Aiken.
