McMillan Lineage

Clan MacMillan of Isle of Islay, Scotland

 

The Clan MacMillan has its roots in an ancient royal house and from the orders of the Celtic church. The progenitor of the clan was Gillie Chriosd, one of the sons of the Cormac, the Bishop of Dunkeld. 

There are two enduring MacMillan memorials in Scotland today. One of these is a round tower, built as part of Castle Sween by the 12th chief of the MacMillan clan. Castle Sween itself is the oldest stone built castle in Scotland. The other MacMillan memorial is a cross which stands in the churchyard at Kilmory. This cross is recognized as one of the finest surviving examples of Celtic art in Scotland, and shows a chief of the MacMillans hunting deer. The MacMillan family were not noted as Jacobites, but tradition states that two sons of John MacMillan of Murlagan carried the Lochiel from where he fell on Culloden field. Prince Charles Edward Stewart made his last stand from the MacMillan home in Arkaig.

2. ANGUS2MCMILLAN (Archibald1) was born in 1813 in Isle of Islay, Scotland. He was a farmer. Early in 1885 he became ill for 6 weeks and died of consumption. Duncan Stewart signed the death record. Date of death was 21 Feb 1885.  He lived in Arthur Twp. , Waterloo Co., Wellington District, Concession 5.   He married Flora McIntyre, daughter of Peter McIntyre and Isabel Carrick, on 24 Jul 1838 in Kilchoman, Islay, Scotland. She was born in 1813 in Kilchoman, Isle of Islay, Scotland. She died on 15 Mar 1902 in Buried at the Wellington County Home for the Aged Cemetery.

  • OBITUARY: 12-20-1962.  Floyd W. MacMillan 57, prominent Saginaw druggist and West Side civic leader died early today at Saginaw General Hospital after a brief illness. He lived at 231 Trier. He had been employed as a pharmacist in various Saginaw drugstores before beginning 11 years ago an operation of his own store at 422 Hancock. A member and past president of the West Saginaw Civic Improvement Association, he had been active in civic improvement projects especially in the West Side business district. He also was prominent in fraternal affairs. He was a member of Salina Lodge 55 F&AM the Bay City Consistory, Merlin Grotto, Fordney Club, Pioneer club, Saginaw Elks and Moose lodges and the Bridgeport Country Club. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Born March 15, 1905 in Bay City he came here with his parents when a child. He graduated from Saginaw High School and Ferris Institute. He married Henrietta Golombisky Aug. 17 1930. He leaves his wife, two daughters Mrs. John A. Nitz of Corten and Mrs. William H. Arbury of Midland, three sons, Donald G. MacMillan of New York, Willis R of Ferndale and Robert C. of Huntsville, Alabama, Mrs Maude M. Alden of Saginaw, a brother, C. Donald of Ferndale, a sister, Mrs Irene Potter of Ann Arbor and 10 grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday.

    • OBITUARY: December 1994. Carl Donald MacMillan, 88, of Afton, died Dec. 18, 1994, at Bortz Health Care of Petoskey.There will be no visitation or service. Mr. MacMillan was born Sept. 7, 1906, in Marquette, the son of Pete and Maude (Weir) MacMillan. He attended Saginaw schools, graduating in 1925. Mr. MacMillan began working with Pere Marquette, then the Baltimore & Ohio Railroads, retiring in 1971. On Feb. 15, 1938, he married Betty C. Barley in Saginaw. After retirement, the couple moved to the Afton area. Survivors include three daughters, Barbara Jo Diles of Southfield, Carol Lynn Barr of Winona, Minn., and Donna Irene Lenar of Alpena; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Mr. MacMillan was preceded in death by a sister, Irene Potter, in 1992. Arrangements were handled by the Charles G. Parks Funeral Home in Petoskey.
    • OBITUARY: ALPENA: Betty Caroline MacMillan, 88, died peacefully on October 15, 2004. Born in Marion, IN. in 1916, to Carl and Esther (Coffman) Farley, Betty grew up in Toledo, Ohio then moved to Saginaw, Michigan. After completing a practical nursing degree, she metand married Carol Don MacMillan on Feb. 15, 1938. They moved to Ferndale, MI with their three daughters in 1944, where they resided until 1972 when they retired to a bungalow on the Pigeon River in Afton. Don passed away in 1994.Betty was a dedicated mom and wife, as well as a community volunteer. She supported her children in music lessons; was leader of a Girl Scout Troop; drove for the Red Cross; worked for the J.L. Hudson Company and McClutcheys of Indian River. Among her hobbies were sewing, knitting, flower-arranging, gardening and collecting Petoskey stones. Betty loved long country walks with her beloved German shepard, Duchess,and riding snowmobiles. Betty shared her faith as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Indian River and Alpena. She enjoyed her family and going to lunch with her friends. Betty is survived by three daughters, Barbara Diles of Bloomfield Hills, MI., Carol (Mickey)(Daniel) Barr of Fountain City, Wisconsin and Donna (Greg) Lenar of Alpena, MI; four grandchildren, David (Donna) Ninowski of Westfield, MI, Frederick (Diane) Barr of River Falls, WI, Joel (Suzanne) Lenar of Bay City, MI, Jeremy Lenar of Alanson, MI, Danielle(David) McGrath of Minneapolis, MN; seven great-grandchildren, Jennifer, David and Dane Ninowski, Zoe, Samuel and Isabelle Barr, Courtney Lenar and baby McGrath duein 2005 and many nieces and nephews. Preceding Betty in death were her parents, her husband, grandson Eric Barr, and brother Jack Beckwith. Memorial services will be held Nov. 13, 2004 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses of Alpena. Interment of her cremains will be in Ridge Cemetery in Gladwin, MI.

Bill was a coach, teacher, counselor and Assistant Principal at Hazel Park High School, where he was affectionately known as ‘Mr. Mac’ and he devoted 57 years to officiating all sports for the Michigan High School Athletic Association. OBITUARY: Published in Herald Tribune from Feb. 24 to Feb. 25, 2015. Barbara Jo (MacMillan) Diles Obituary. Diles (nee MacMillan), Barbara Jo Nov. 19, 1938 – Feb. 16, 2015 Avid supporter of musical arts in Michigan and Florida, Barbara Jo Diles passed away on February 16, 2015, at Tidewell Hospice Care Center, Lakewood Ranch, Florida, after bravely dealing with lung cancer for the past year. Her sister Carol, grandson David, and several friends were with Barbara as she quietly and peacefully left her earthly home to spend eternity with her son, David J. Ninowski. Born in Saginaw, Michigan, to Carl Donald and Betty Caroline (Barley) MacMillan, Barbara grew up in Ferndale, Michigan, and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1956. Barbara received coursework in business management from Oakland University and art administration from Harvard University. An accomplished violinist and trained vocalist, Barbara’s life was infused with musical arts – choral groups, symphony orchestras and opera organizations. In Detroit she was an original member of the Kenneth Jewell Choir, sang with the Rackham Choir, as a soloist at Kirk In The Hills Presbyterian Church Choir, many other local church choirs and was on the board of The Opera Organization. Her orchestral management affiliations were with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Birmingham/Bloomfield Symphony Orchestra. Barbara was a board member and officer in many volunteer groups supporting the DSO and the BBSO. When Barbara retired to Sarasota in 2013, she continued to sing fulltime with the Saint Boniface Episcopal Church choir that she joined several years ago as a ‘snowbird,’ and sang with the prestigious Schola Cantorum choir this past year. She sang with the Musica Sacra Cantorum and with Gloria Musicae Chorus group before becoming a board member in development. Barbara is survived by her sisters, Carol (Daniel) Barr and Donna (Greg) Lenar; grandsons David C. and Dane N. Ninowski, granddaughter Jennifer Ninowski and great-granddaughter Rylee Payne-Ninowski, and daughter-in-law Donna Ninowski; Nephews and niece; cousins Ann Superko, Sharon Levine and dear friend Greg Pond. She was predeceased by her parents, son David J. Ninowski, and nephew Eric S. Barr. Her beloved Siamese, KoKo, passed away the same day as Barbara, so as they lived 19 years together, so will they be together for eternity. A Memorial Service will be held February 28th, at 11:00 a.m., at Saint Boniface Episcopal Church, 5615 Midnight Pass Road, Siesta Key (Sarasota) Fl. In addition, a Memorial Service will take place in Michigan on May 16th, at 11:00 a.m. at the Kirk In The Hills Presbyterian Church, 1340 W. Long Lake Road, Bloomfield Hills. He was born March 28, 1965 in Royal Oak, Mich. to Daniel and Carol (MacMillan) Barr. Eric was a graduate of Winona Senior High School and received a bachelor of social science degree from Winona State University. While attending the university, he founded and was the executive publisher of The Review, a student newspaper with an emphasis on campus events. In 1989-90, he was manager of the college center. Eric served on the student senate and judicial board, was the Minnesota State University Conference co-chair in 1990, served on the Winona Community Relations Board (1992-95) and in 1991-95 served on the Energy Saving Midwest Region of the Association of College and University Housing Officers, which presented him with their Media and Technology Award in 1994. Eric received a fine arts scholarship at the university and was named to the Who’s Who in 1988-89. Eric enjoyed playing his accordion, which he taught himself to play; driving his limousine for friends, in parades and just for fun. He was usually involved with some type of project – reconstructing, decorating, lighting, painting – always looking for something to do. Eric usually had an opinion and vast pieces of information on almost every subject. He received friends with a warm handshake or a big bear hug. He loved his dog, Stonewall, and cat, Spooker. Eric is loved by his family and friends and we will really miss him. We know he loved us. Survivors include his parents, Daniel and Carol (Mickey) Barr of Winona; a sister, Danielle Barr of Minneapolis; a brother Frederick (Diane) Barr and a niece, Zoe, of Burnsville, Minn.; his grandmother, Betty MacMillan of Afton, Mich.; and grandparents, Ted and Mary Barr of New Baltimore, Mich.
