French Huguenots

“The Rutan family is of remote antiquity. Proof has been uncovered in France of the family having come from noble blood and of its having been associated with the vicinity of St. Mihiel in Lorraine, and later of Metz in Moselle, during the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries, prior to the coming of the first member of its family to America. Some of the noblest families of France have been those whose names have become associated with Huguenot history and for many years prior to the Reformation their names had become famed for distinguished services. Such a family was the Rutan. Louis Moreri (1614.3 – 1680), French historian, mentions the Rutant (old form of spelling) family as a distinguished one and Dom Pelletier, author of the “Nobiliare of Barrois”, classes the Rutants amongst the aristocratic families of France for over a century. Among the first European members of the Rutan, or Rutant family, for whom records can be found, were Philip and Ferry Rutant. They, and their descendants, were residents of the town of St. Mihiel on the river LaMeuse in Lorraine, now the province of Meuse. The family was well known as drapers, or cloth merchants and manufacturers of laces, cloths, etc.”

Notes for Ferry Rutant: “The first record is Ferry Rutan when he was mayor of St. Mihiel in 1534. The mob violence (of the religious war) struck first at St. Mihiel and the Rutan family fled to Metz where they established themselves in their various pursuits of good citizenship. It is to be noted that the records show this ancestry to be of noble birth, as a descendant of Ferry Rutan was exempt from tax in 1659 because of his rank of the privileged.”

Notes for Blaise Rutant/Ruttan: Blaise was a lacemaker. In I608 he became a Protestant and settled in Metz on the Rue Vincentine (Vincent Street) with his family. He became the Master of Weights of the City. They had 6 sons and 6 daughters. The names listed are the only ones to be found, although there were two other daughters named Marie. Often when a child died, the parents used the same name again.

Notes for Claude Ruttan: Claude, the second son of Claudin and brother of Blaise, was christened in the Roman Catholic faith at St. Mihiel on Oct. 19, 1590. He later became Protestant. He was a woolen draper and cloth merchant, Removing to Metz he married Sara Vigeny. They had five children; 1 and 2:twins, Judith and Marie, christened December 30, l6l6. 3. Jean, b. May l6l8. k. ‘Daniel, chr. Dec 27, 1620, 5. Abraham, chr. Jan. 9, 162U. Claude died on September 2, 1658.

Notes for Abraham Blaise Ruttan: New Jersey, 1670-1817 for Abraham Rutan, Volume XXIII, Abstracts of Wills, 1670-1730. Shows the Will of Abraham listing wife Mary (Marie) as executor and only 4 children: Daniel being left some land outright, also became executor by endorsement in1713, other children listed in the will: Susanna, David and Peter. His son Abraham must have been 14 in 1717, the age he could legally elect a guardian after the death of his mother in 1713.

From “Life Sketch” is the following: “Abraham Rutant/Ruttan was baptized on 10 Jun 1658 in Metz at the reformed church. The godfathers were Abraham Bruclat and Paul Cluien. The godmothers were Marie Beacalin and Susanna Pilon living in Metz, Abraham was a minor and no records of his life there have been found. About 1670, he moved to Germany, as did many other Huguenots, and settled in or near Mannheim in the Palatinate where Protestantism was accepted. Some years later, he joined the Hasbrouck Party and journeyed with them to Rotterdam, Amsterdam, England and then to America, arriving in the town of Boston in early 1675, moving to Ulster County in July 1675. They moved on to Esopus, the area around Kingston in Ulster County on the west bank of the Hudson River, where, in 1677, Nouveau Palatinat was founded.” In 1677, the people of Mannheim use a dialect form of the name Pfalz without the “f”, pronouncing it “Paltz.” Records of the New Paltz Reformed Church, which was formed in 1683, show the name of the settlement was first expressed not in German, nor in English, but in French: Nouveau Palatinat. The community was governed by a kind of corporation called the Duzine/Douzaine, referring to the twelve partners who acquired the royal patent. That form of government continued well past the time of the American Revolution, by special action of the New York State legislature.

The 40,000 acres (16,000 ha) or so of the patent, stretching to the Hudson River and augmented soon by the other patents on the south, were eventually divided among those twelve partners, their relatives, and a few friends into large plots – part wilderness and part farm. The farms were grouped principally around the heights west and east of the Wallkill River. The commercial center serving the agricultural base was located on the east shore of the Wallkill River, in the area where the first settlers had built their shelters. (The street is now known as Huguenot Street. ) Their lands included modern-day Ulster County and Sullivan County, New York. The tribe fought a series of conflicts against settlers from the New Netherland colony from September 1659 to September 1663, known as the Esopus Wars in and around Kingston, New York. At the conclusion of the conflict, the tribe sold large tracts of land to French Huguenot refugees in New Paltz and other communities. The refugees built log cabins, then some years later they replaced the log cabins with well-built stone houses, such as they had in France. Several of these original settlers’ stone houses are still in use as residences in New Paltz; one is the village museum. The old fort of two stories is a tourist or visitors’ home. The church, which was also used as a school, was located there. Abraham and Maria’s children were among the first to be baptized in the French Church, which was established in 1678 – New Paltz.

iii. DAVID RUTTAN was born in 1688 in New Paltz, Ulster, New York, United States. He died in 1775 in Morristown, Lamoille, Vermont, United States. Notes for David Ruttan: Records show baptism sponsors were Pier Dyyle and Genne Vylar

iv. ESTHER RUTTAN was born in Feb 1690 in New Paltz, NY. She died on 05 Aug 1690. Notes for Esther Ruttan: Baptism records show Abraham Hasbrouck and Ester Hasbroug acting as sponsors. Evidently Abraham Rutan named his child after Ester Hasbrouck, which would indicate a very close connection between the Rutan and Hasbrouck families. Also recorded in the New Paltz Church” Records on Aug. 5, 1690: “a daughter of Abraham Rutan, named Ester, died age 6 months.”

v. PETER RUTTAN was born about 1691 in NY. He married Geertruy Van der Hoef on 07 Nov 1713 in Hackensack, Bergen, New Jersey, USA. She was born in Albany, Albany, New York, USA. Notes for Peter Ruttan: Sponsors at Peter’s baptism were Pierre Qulner and Ester Hasbroug. In the marriage records of the Hackensack Dutch Reformed Church we find under the date of Nov. 7, 1713: “Pieter Rettan, y.m. (Young man) born in Espopus” married “Geertruy Van der Hoef, y. d. (young damsel), born in Albany”. Cornelius Burnham Harvey, in his “Genealogical History of Bergen and Hudson Counties, New Jersey” states: “In November 1713, Daniel’s brother Peter located at New Barbadoes where he married Gertrude Vanderhoff. The Vanderhoffs and Rutans came to Bergen County from Albany about the same time. Probably they were related. The Rutans settled first at Boiling Springs, now Rutherford, and some of the children removed and settled west of Saddle River in the Hohokus and Paramus sections of Bergen County where many of them still reside”, (circa. 1900).

vi. SUSANNA RUTTAN was born about 1696. She married JOHANNES PIER.

vii. CATHARINA RUTTAN was born about 1699. She died before 1712.

viii. ABRAHAM RUTTAN was born in 1703 in New Barbadoes, NJ. Notes for Abraham Ruttan: According.to Miss Edna Garrigus, in her treatise “Family Genealogies” compiled for the Nova Caesarea Chapter, D.A.R., the only”mention of Abraham (2)Rutan Is recorded in the State House at Trenton, N.J. Letters of guardianship were granted by his “Excellency Robert Hunter, Esq., Captain General and Governor in Chief of New Jersey, etc., unto John Bradbury whom Abraham Rutan, Son of Abraham Rutan late of Bergen Co., deceased, made choice Aug. 14, 1717,. dated in New York Oct. 28′, 1717”. As a child above the age of 14 and under the age of 21 he was allowed to choose his own guardian. Young Abraham must have been about 14 or 15 years of age when this occurred. Therefore, he must have been born about 1702 or 1703. Since Abraham (l) Rutan, his father, had purchased a plantation from Noel in New Barbadoes in 1699 and died on the plantation he purchased of Nathaniel Feurt in 1712, Abraham (2) Rutan must have been born at New Barbadoes. John Bradbury was also guardian of Samuel Rutan, younger brother of Abraham, and on Sept. 17, 1725 gave the latter a plantation at thesouthern end of the present town of Nutley. This, in recent years was known as the Plenge Farm, and a portion of the original Samuel Rutan Plantation has now been developed and is known as “The Rutan Estate”. The transaction occurred when Samuel reached his majority at the age of 21. There is no record of a similar transaction for Abraham (2) and since there are no other records of Abraham’s activities the supposition is that Abraham died before he reached the age of 21.

xi. HESTOR RUTTAN. Notes for Hestor Ruttan: Baptism Sponsors were Grace De Bois and Catelyn Costerhout. Evidently the Rutans were on their way from New Paltz, where their first five children were born, to New Barbadoes, N.J., when Hestor was born. It is believed the Rutans remained at Kingston for a time enroute.

12.xii. MARIA RUTTAN. She married Thomas Pier, son of Tunis Jansen Pier and Cartina Tomasse, on 26 Aug 1721 in Hackensack, Bergen, New Jersey, USA.

9. DANIEL⁷RUTTAN (Abraham Blaise⁶, Daniel⁵, Claude⁴, Claude Rutant, Florentine (Blaise)² Rutant Ruttan, Ferry¹ Rutant) was born on 23 Sep 1684 in New Paltz, Ulster, New York, USA. He married Herrempje (Armtie) Spier, daughter of Hans Spier and Trijntje Pieters, on 09 Mar 1710 in New Barbadoes, NJ (Hackensack). She was born in New Jersey, USA. She died on 06 Apr 1728.

Notes for Daniel Ruttan: At the time of his marriage to Armtie Speir, March, 1710, Daniel was 26 years of Age. Shortly after this he and his wife were living on his father’s plantation which was then known as Rosendaal, named after the city of Rosendaal in Holland. This area became known as Rosendale. It was on this plantation the couple raised their children. It is believed they may have been buried in a private Rutan Burying Ground, long ago destroyed, upon the Rosendale plantation.

He died after 1740. He married (1) MARIE ANGELIQUE DAVID on 01 Oct 1708 in Tarrytown, NY. She died about 1718 in Tarrytown, NY. He married (2) ELIZABETH FOSHIER on 31 Jan 1719 in Philipsburg, NY. The name spelling of Marie Angelique David was noted in Tarrytown Church Records as Engeltje Davidse b. Laval, Canada.

Notes for Samuel Ruttan: In the office of the Secretary of State, Trenton, N.J., are the following “Letters of Guardianship was granted to John Bradbury of Samuel Rutan in the County of Essex, the Prerogative being duly accepted by his Excellency – Kearny Sept. 17th, 1725”. When Samuel became of age he was given the tract of land mentioned. The late Calvin Rutan, who lived on the old plantation before it was sold to the Plenges, owned a quitclaim correcting the length of one of the bounds. Samuel married and had at least two sons Henry and Samuel. His will is filed at Trenton.

Theunis Dey and was in the battle of Fort Lee on the Hudson River. He was allowed a pension due to his service in the Revolution, His pension application was executed Sept. 30, 1832. Notes for Robert Ruttan: At the Longwell Cemetery at Vernon, Sussex Co., N. J., is a granite gravestone marked: “Robert Rutan; Died June 23, 1858, age 64 years, 10 months,15 days”. Next to it is a similar stone; that of his wife Mary Courter. On the other side of it is a small red sandstone slab crudely marked: “The 11 October 1778, D.R., is buried.” These inscriptions were copied on Sunday, June 3, 1956, with Mrs. C. B. Bruns as witness (D. A. R., National No. 448 559 -Admitted Dec.5,1955.) Checking the dates, as given on the gravestones in the Longwell Cemetery, with those given by Miss Haldane and those found in the Abraham D. Rutan Bible we find they are the same, so there is no question the graves are those of Robert and Mary Rutan.

Notes for George Fisher: Soon after they were married George and Hannah Rutan Fisher removed to Brookdale, Bloomfield, N. J., where they purchased the old Powlesson Farm. George became engaged in raising horseradish and is credited to be the first to engage in this commodity. The Brookdale brand of horseradish was known for its zippy flavor and found a wide market in New York hotels. George guarded his radish well, also his method of cleaning the fibers off the roots as they grew. One fiber was allowed to remain to form the root for the following year. However, other farmers managed to get hold of roots, learn the secret of raising it, and finally the raising of the Brookdale type radish spread throughout the area. Nevertheless the method of raising the root was jealously kept a dark secret and even a few years back it was almost an impossibility to buy the embryo roots. Now, the farms have been converted into housing and industrial areas. No longer can Brookdale horseradish be purchased and horseradish from other areas does not have the tang of the Brookdale. George Fisher also entered politics. For many years he was superintendent of roads in Bloomfield and in 1904 when Bloomfield changed its form of.government to the Mayor and Council form he became Bloomfield- 3 first mayor. He was also active in many civic enterprises.

OBITUARY: Obituary for Sue Darlene Klenk of Sterling, Michigan: Sue, age 76, passed away on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw. She was born in Gladwin, Michigan to Ovid and Maxine (Ruttan) Huber on February 26, 1936. She was raised by Isaac Edward and Lydia Catherine (White) Ruttan. On April 24, 1954, she married Raymond H. Klenk at St. John’s Catholic Church in Standish, Michigan. He preceded her on February 2, 2006. She was a lifelong area resident of Sterling. She enjoyed the position of Lay Leader and was a Certified Lay Speaker at the United Methodist Church in Sterling. She was also a sure shot with the muzzleloader, an avid bowler, a loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother. She had a heart of gold and will be sadly missed by many. Sue is survived by her children Raymond Boyd (Denise) Klenk of Sterling, Leta (Roger) Rashotte of Pinconning, Todd (Roxanne) Klenk of Linden; grandchildren Ryan (Shara) Klenk, Shawna L. Klenk (and friend Jeremy Gillespie), Matthew (Michelle) Rashotte, Nicholas (Cyrena) Rashotte, Rhonda L. Klenk, Anthony S. Klenk and Andrew R. Klenk; four great-grandchildren and one on the way; four half-sisters and one half-brother; several brothers- and sisters- in- law; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her grandson Corey Klenk and one half-brother. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at 6:00 PM at the R. O. Savage Funeral Chapel in Standish, Michigan. Pastor James Payne will officiate the service. Visitation will be Saturday, May 12, 2012 from 10:00 AM until the service at 6:00 PM. Rheutan from the “Societe De L’Historie Du Protestantisme Francais” Manuscripts in the Archives of France. Other members of the family held important official positions.

In 1506 Phillipe Rutant was a foremost draper in St. Mihiel.
In 1534 Ferry Rutant was Chancellor Eskeoin to the town house at St. Mihiel.
Jacques Rutant was Councellor of State and President of the Grand Jours de St. Mihiel. His wife was Claudin de Lescut, Lady of Hanonville. They had a daughter Francoise.
Jean Rutant and Blaise Rutant held the same dignities in the year 1553.
During the year of 1554 the Town of St. Mihiel borrowed of Jean Rutant fifty gold crowns to present to the Duchess of Lorraine,
Ferry Rutant, believed to be the son of Phillipe, and his wife were living in St. Mihiel in 1564 when their daughter Barbe married, Oct. 25, 1564. Ferry Rutant’s wife died in 1593 at Silly, France.
In 1589 the Abbey of St. Mihiel purchased from Jacques Rutant, grandson of Ferry, silk and gold thread desired by the famed Abbot Merlin to equip the Soldiers of the Church at the time of the Roman Catholic Signe, Jacques was wealthy and influential and loaned the Duke of Lorraine large sums of money for the holy war against the Protestants under King Henry Fourth.

From other French documents the following information was obtained:

Florentine Rutan was living in St. Mihiel in 1598.
Jean Rutant was governor of the Saltchines of Salone and Catherine Zeltre was his wife.
Jacques Rutant, Esquire, Seigner de Gerberville, was Lieutenant General under the Bailiff of St. Mihiel. His only daughter, Anne, married Thiery Seigneur de Saint Saussant. Jacques died in 1636. Jean Rutant, Seigmeur de Troyon, was Lieutenant General in St. Mihiel. His wife was Marie Marion.
In 1608 Blaise, son of Claude, Rutant, a lacemaker, left St.Mihiel due to religious persecutions and became a resident of Metz.
In 1621 one Rutant of St. Mihiel hired from the city of Metz a house in the Rue Vielle Tappe, He probably left St. Mihiel because of political and religious reasons. In 1636 other Rutants, descendants of Ferry, left St. Mihiel and settled in Metz. They had all become of the Protestant faith by this time. It may seem strange that an entire family would move from one city to another nearby because of religious reasons. We must remember, however, that each town was ruled by a different person and when the residents of the town were compelled t cfollow the beliefs of the ruler there was only one thing to do if one did not believe that way. He could move to a town where the ruler was more lenient, or believed as he did. And so we find the Rutants moving to Metz.
The old parish and Protestant registers and the state records in the French libraries often mention the family Rutant or Rutan, The parish registers of the old form of government (before 1792) make more mentions of baptisms and deaths of members of the Rutant fami]y, especially those in the St, Etienne parish, 1730 – 1789.

Finally the civil state records (after 1792) of today’s archives give the following information on other Rutant(s) – no Ruttant family members remained in Metz in mid 20th century:

JOHN BAPTISTE RUTANT – Architect for the Bishop of Metz b. Abt 1720
JEAN BAPTISTE RUTANT – Captain of Engineers and architect b. 1740 was the eldest son of JOHN BAPTISTE RUTANT.
ANTOINE ALESEIUS RUTANT, was the eldest son of Jean Rutant above, a colonist refuge married in 1799 at St. Dominque (Metz). They had children: Jeane, born at La Havane; Anthilme, born at New York; and Charles Gaspard Rutan, architect and master builder in construction work.
