Brader History
There is a theory that before living in the Palatinate, the Braders were French Huguenots who had been driven from France by Louis 14th. Their appearance was dark hair and eyes, quickness of speech and movement. Many Huguenots had been living along the Rhine River and intermarried with Germans.

1740 – Johannes Nickell (Nicholas) Broder, age 33, born in the Palatinate region of Germany, arrived in Philadelphia 25 Nov 1740 on the sailing ship Loyal Judith out of Rotterdam. It is not known if Nicholas is Wendel’s father or brother. Neither his wife nor children were identified. Nicholas followed the Palatinate Germans and others before him into what is now Lehigh County. Nicholas took out a warrant on 50 + 25 acres of land in Bucks county on 17 July 1751 (now Weissenberg Township, Lehigh County, adjacent to the Weissenberg Church built about that time). It is not known if he ever lived on this land. He is not mentioned in “The History of the Counties of Lehigh and Carbon, 1884” by Mathews and Hungerford. Nicholas at some point moved to Northampton County. He was interred at Dryland Church cemetery in Lower Nazareth Township, Northampton County in 1776, age 70.
1744 – Wendel Broder, about age 24, also born in the Palatinate region of Germany, arrived in Philadelphia 20 Oct 1744 on the sailing ship Phoenix out of Rotterdam. On 30 March 1749, he took out a warrant for 50+ acres of land in Bucks County (now Lynn Township, Lehigh County). This land was very close (a mile or so) to the land warranted by Nicholas. It is not known if he ever lived on this land. He also is not mentioned in “The History of the Counties of Lehigh and Carbon, 1884” by Mathews and Hungerford. In 1744 this area was all part of Bucks County. It became Northampton County in 1752, and then Lehigh County in 1812. This area of Northwest Lehigh County, called “Allemaengel,” and Northern Berks County were lightly populated in 1750 and quite dangerous from Indian raids during and after the French and Indian war until about 1765. Some settlers from the area chose to retreat for a time to areas of greater population and possible militia protection closer to Reading, Allentown and Bethlehem.
1758 – Wendel Broder married Elisabeth Ducken, the daughter of Philip Duck, on 
26 Feb 1758 at the Pikestown schoolhouse, which was located in what is today East/West Pikeland Township, Chester County. This event was recorded in the church records of the Augustus Evangelical Lutheran Church at the town of Trappe (now Montgomery County, north of Philadelphia) about 10 miles from the schoolhouse. Schoolhouses were often built before churches by the Pennsylvania German communities and were attended by itinerant pastors for services. Shortly thereafter, Elisabeth was 
confirmed into the Lutheran religion at the Augustus Evangelical Lutheran Church at Trappe on Easter Sunday, 26 Mar 1758. This church, built in 1743 (rebuilt 1852, remodeled 1878) and still in existence today, was the seat of Lutheranism in the Eastern Pennsylvania region and was led by Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, a distinguished pastor who was recruited from
Germany. He likely would have performed the Easter service, and he might have performed the marriage at Pikestown, though no Muhlenberg record of that period has been found. Elisabeth’s maiden name might have been Dick or the feminine form, Dicken. Wendel and Elisabeth had a friend named Peter Dick at Schoenersville. Also, The Rev. Muhlenberg’s Journals refer to brothers Philip and Peter Dick in the Trappe area. Other research has found ancestors by the name of Duck, possibly in Lancaster County.
1768 – Tax records from 1768 show that Wendel Breeder (alternate spellings of names were common at the time) paid taxes on 100 acres of land in Maiden Creek Township, Berks County. Thirty acres were improved and 8 acres were planted. This may indicate that they actually lived on this property. A “return of property tax” on this land was also paid in 1789 after Wendel’s death. However, he is not mentioned in “The History of Berks County, 1886” by M.L. Montgomery. Maiden Creek Township is about 10 miles north of Reading and about 20 miles west of Allentown. Over time, the name Broder changed to Broeder, then Breder, then Brader. Due to transcription errors other variations of the name can be found as well: Britter, Breader, Breeder, etc.
1772 – Tax records from 1772 and later show Wandel Breder (again alternate spellings) owned a farm of 100 acres in Allen Township, Northampton County. This farm was surely in what is now Hanover Township, Lehigh County. Hanover Township was formed out of lower Allen Township in 1798, and part of that became Hanover Township, Lehigh County in 1812 when Lehigh County was formed. The 1775 Tax list shows his name as “Vandle Bredre”. Wendel and Elisabeth’s eleven children were born between 1758 and 1781. They were Lorenz, Philip, Heinrich, Anna C. (maybe), Adam, Chatarina, Georg, Mary, John Wendel (maybe), Thorothea (Dorothea), Jacob. Wendel died in 1786, about age 66. Elisabeth died a few years later. Anna’s death date is recorded in Dryland Church records as 1853.)
1785 – By 1785, some of Wendel and Elisabeth’s children also owned farms. By 1789 according to tax records, Lorenz and wife, Maria, had a 30-acre farm, Heinrich (Henry) and wife, Elisabeth, had a 75-acre farm, and Philip had a 100-acre farm (this might have been Wendel’s farm). These farms were all located in Hanover Township in what is now Lehigh County. “The History of the Counties of Lehigh and Carbon, 1884” by Mathews and Hungerford, describes (through some analysis) Heinrich’s farm as being located about one mile south of Schoenersville. Jacob and Adam also resided in Hanover Township. By 1798, George also owned land nearby in Hanover Township, Northampton County.
1800 – Philip relocated, likely associated with his marriage to Christina Wolff in 1788, to Bethlehem Township in what is now Lower Nazareth Township, Northampton County. This is where the Dryland Reformed Church is located at Heckstown. The Schoenersville Christ Church and the Dryland Reformed Church were central to the families’ lives and they contain many family records of births, baptisms, confirmations, weddings, general attendance, communion attendance and deaths. Sometimes the Dryland Records were kept at the First United Church of Christ in Easton. These churches had both a Reformed congregation and a Lutheran congregation, with different pastors, sharing the same building. This was common in early Pennsylvania German churches and is also true of the St. John’s (Miller) Church (of later generations) in Laurys Station, North Whitehall Township.

Allentown Obituary states death of Breder, Barbara Ann, widow of John, died age 72 years. According to the book “Early Breders of Lehigh Co. Pa” (which has her name misspelled as Anna Barbara Fritz) b. 10-21-1787 d. 1-3-1859. “Portrait and Biographical Record of Lehigh, Northampton and Carbon Counties, circa 1894” records Anna Frantz as being related to the family of Henry Frantz who was killed by Indians in 1764. “The Brader family originally came from Germany, and the first to locate in America made settlement in Northampton County in a very early day. On his (Henry’s) grandmother’s side, our subject is of Revolutionary stock.” Anna Barbara’s father Peter was the only surviving son of Henry Frantz, his daughter Margaret was stolen by the Indians. Notes for Richard Brader: The Slatington News, Oct 21, 1868, Attempted Robbery. On Sunday nite October 13th, while a young man of this place, by the name of Richard Braeder was returning from a visit to Cherryville, and when going into a woods between Walnutport & Cherryville, two ruffians leaped thereforth and attempted to stop his horse with the intent of robbing him. Mr. Braeder however, succeeded in making his escape later being terribly frightened and nearly upsetting his carriage.
OBITUARY: Allentown Morning Call, Thursday June 9, 1908. Mrs. Mary Brader died at her home 209 N. Front St. yesterday of ailments due to old age in her 69th year. Notes for Allen J. Brader: From “Portrait and Biographical Record, Lehigh, Northampton and Carbon Counties, PA” (page 315): CAPTAIN ALLEN J. BRADER. Lehigh County sent many brave, patriotic men to the front during the Civil War, that trying time which tested a man’s loyalty and devotion to his country. Among them was Mr. Brader, who won honor as a soldier, and rose from the ranks to an important official position in his regiment. He is now quietly pursuing farming in North Whitehall Township and has done good service here in the aid he has given his fellow agriculturists in promoting the growth of this part of the county. The Brader family originally came from Germany, and the first to locate in America made settlement in Northampton County in a very early day. On his grandmother’s side, our subject is of Revolutionary stock. The family, which bore the name of Frantz, consisted of seven members, all of whom were killed by the Indians and were buried in one grave in Salisbury Township.
Captain Brader, of this sketch, passed his boyhood days in Allentown and when sixteen years of age decided to learn the trade of a machinist. He entered the agricultural works, and for three years was in the employ of his father, who in company with John Young, was the proprietor of that establishment. He followed this line of trade until the outbreak of the late war, when, on October 22, 1861, he enlisted as a 1st Sergeant and went to the front as a member of Company K, Fifty-fourth Pennsylvania Infantry. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on January 1, 1864. They operated principally in the Shenandoah Valley and May 15, 1864, fought the battle of Newmarket. Later they participated in the engagements at Piedmont, Lexington, VA., Lynchburg, Snicker’s Gap and Winchester, at which latter place Mr. Brader was captured and was confined in prison in Columbia, S.C. where he was compelled to stay for seven months. He was also captured on another occasion on the Potomac River, and held for two months in Richmond and Libby Prisons. Our subject was honorably discharged in March, 1865, after which he returned to Allentown and followed his former business for a time in company with his brother Frank, under the firm name of Brader Bros.”

He belongs to the Democratic party in politics, and on all subjects his judgment is good. Well educated, he has naturally been called upon to fill responsible positions, and served as School Director for some time. OBITUARY: Allentown Democrat Newspaper, Wednesday, January 5, 1910: Charles E. Brader, a well-known citizen of Treichlers, died Monday morning at his home, of heart failure resulting from a complication of diseases, aged 50 years. For many years, Mr. Brader had been employed by the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company at Packerton. He is survived by his wife, three sons, Edward F., Joseph A., and Richard J., one daughter, Estha B., and his parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Franklin Brader, all of Treichlers, and four brothers and four sisters, Joseph of Lehighton, Robert of Philadelphia, and John, James, Alice, Mattie, Sarah and Annie of Treichlers. The Private funeral will be held tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. at his late home, and interment made in Miller’s Church Cemetery.
Notes for Frances A. Kiesele: The Braders and the Kressleys lived back to back in Allentown – The Kressley’s on Chestnut Street and the Braders on Linden Street. Frances was married first to Charles Brader. After his death, and for a reason we can only guess at, she convinced a 21-year-old Elmer Kressley to marry her, telling him that although she was older, in her religion, “the soul had no age”. (We believe she was of the Moravian faith). This union of an old widow woman and a young son made Elmer’s parents VERY angry. Because of the uproar, Elmer and Frances moved to Highland Park (Detroit) MI, along with Frances’s children, Edward, Joseph,Richard and Esther. (About 1910). Once in Highland Park, Elmer helped to build a house, a part of which he was to own in return. When her daughter Esther turned 18 in December 1914, Frances made a “deal” with Elmer – she would let him out of the marriage with her if he married her daughter, Esther. He did. No one knows what happened to his share in the house he built with Esther’s brothers. Frances died at Receiving Hospital in Detroit, MI on November 17, 1936. (MI death certificate Register # 13649, State Office No. 217698). Cause of death was listed as Hypertensive Heart Disease and Chronic hepatitis. It also mentioned nephritis, a kidney disease. The informant of her death was her son Edward Brader. She was cremated at White Chapel Crematorium on November 20, 1936.

She passed at home surrounded by her loving family following a courageous battle with cancer. Born August 27, 1935 to Spencer and Dorothy Brader in Minneapolis, MN. Graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1957 with a B.A. in Social Work. Employed at welfare departments in Ramsey County MN, and Fauquier County VA. Volunteered at the Red Cross for many years working for Military Emergency Services. Active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many capacities. She was a popular teacher in the Young Women’s organization. She also worked in the Family History Center, and was Relief Society President several times. She has resided in Bella Vista, AR for the last 20 years. Sue spent her entire life serving others. She was funny, smart, kind, honest, positive and big on “doing the right thing”. Joseph died April 12, 1957 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Pontiac, MI. Cause of death cerebral thrombosis. Helen Brader, listed as his wife, was the informant. They had lived at 2609 Welch Road in Walled Lake. He was cremated on April 15, 1957 at White Chapel Cemetery in Birmingham, MI. Death Certificate was signed by W.G. Nixon (the funeral home director). His wife, Helen Low Brader had a daughter out of wedlock in 1916.

Notes for Esther Barbara Brader: Esther and Elmer were married early in 1915 (supposedly after a divorce between her mother and Elmer had been accomplished). It was said that Esther was ill – craving chocolate candy and sweets. Esther became pregnant soon after the marriage to Elmer. Leonard was born in Highland Park in September, 1916. Because of her illness, Esther, Frances, Esther’s younger brother Richard and her baby Leonard traveled to Los Angeles and USC Medical Center so Esther could get medical treatment. Francis, Richard and Leonard stayed in California after Esther died September 22, 1917 as they are listed in the 1920 Census of Los Angeles, living at 730 S. Mott St.). Elmer is not listed with them, in fact, he is not in any 1920 census. The cause of death stated on her death certificate was tuberculosis of the intestines and pancreas. However, Her death certificate also indicated that the duration of this disease was – “since childhood.” She was cremated at Evergreen Crematory on September 24, 1917. The doctor was Jas. Stewart, D.O.
Notes for Elmer Jacob Kressley: Lived at 166 Chestnut street in Allentown. The Braders lived directly behind at 151 Linden Street, Allentown. The story is true. Frances Kiesele Brader coerced a 21 year old Elmer to marry her in July 1911. This crafty old widow made a deal – she let him out of the marriage if he married Frances’s 18 year old daughter Esther. Or, perhaps Elmer and Esther got caught and the shotgun was fired. (The recorded reason for divorce was “adultery” on his part –at that time there were only three reasons for a divorce to be granted, extreme cruelty, abandonment or adultery). Divorce was granted July 26, 1915. Elmer married Esther Sept 22, 1915. One year later “Lennie” was born September 10, 1916, and due to Esther’s continued illness from childhood, Lennie was looked after by Frances most of the time. Living in the same home on Palmer Ave. (supposedly the house Elmer and Frances’s sons Ed, Joe built in Highland Park, was Joseph’s new wife Margaret Helen Low Morris Brader. June 5, 1917 Elmer filed a W W 1 Draft Card – he was working as an auto mechanic in Los Angeles (Acme Garage) while Esther was being treated for her illness.

Notes for Henry Milton Brader: Excerpt from Article “What’s in a School Name?” the Newark Post, October 1999. In 1989, the elementary school in Four Seasons off Route 896 south of Newark was named after longtime district principal Henry Brader. Brader grew up in Laurys Station, PA, where he attended a small, two-room school. He received a bachelor of science degree from Muhlenberg College, attended Kutztown State Teachers College. He later earned a master’s degree in school administration from Lehigh University.
He began working for the Newark District in 1948. “We were a very small district back then. We had about 800 pupils and 52 staff members,” Brader said. “By the time I retired we had 17,700 pupils.” Former public information officer for the district and long-time arts editor for the Newark Post Newspaper, Phil Toman recalled Brader as being well respected by both parents and students and loved being in contact with them. “Henry Brader did work in the district’s main office for a while, but he liked to be with kids, so he went back to being a school
administrator.” Brader worked closely with then school superintendent, Wilmer E. Shue, who also later had a school named after him, and was involved in decisions relating to the tremendous building of new schools in the area. Brader said he was shocked when a school was named after him. “My wife says I turned white when I heard the news,” he said, recently, with a laugh. Brader continues to reside in the Newark area and periodically visits Brader Elementary.

 Pennsylvania German Tombstones: A Study in Folk Art (Allentown: Schlechter’s for the Pennsylvania German Folklore Society, 1954). “The illustration shows the reverse side of Nicklaus Broder’s tombstone. Its architectural lines show the influence of the baroque Georgian style of the period. Traditional themes are shown in more ornate forms. A modified six-point compass star adorns the head of the stone; quarter-suns radiate from the corners of the panel; from a rather clumsy urn emerges a tree of life in asymmetric form with pendent tulip and bursting fruit.” (p. 112).
