Kolberg Lineage

Origin of the Kolberg Surname

In Polish, the name Kolberg means "near the coast". The town of Kolobrzeg, (Kolberg, when translated to English), province of Koszalin, is probably the place of origin of our ancestors. It is only a few hundred miles Northwest of Iłów and Ruszki where Alvina Witt and John (Jan) Kolberg were born. In the study of genealogy, it is known fact that surnames originated after the 16th century. Usually, the first or "given" name, was only a means of telling one generation from another, where the last name or surname, described the originator's occupation, or where they were from. Germans, in particular, would give their offspring the same name as their father or mother, and then a middle name which was used as their "normal" first name. John was baptized "Jan".
Unfortunately, many old records of the Warsaw area were destroyed during numerous invasions and wars. Although our nineteenth century ancestors were farmers, or "peasants", their ancestors probably migrated south from the Baltic Sea area, which bears their name today. There is a branch of the Kolberg family living in Wisconsin that migrated from the Baltic, to Norway and its isle of Vikna, and in the 1800's to the U.S.
Kolobrzeg is only 400 Miles from the area John is known to have been born.  There is a road, and the river also could have been a means of travel from Kolberg to the small pockets of German settlements.
Most certainly the reason our ancestors left the area when they did: Revolution in the Kingdom of Poland 1905

Parents Gottlieb and Wilhelmina nee Baum (?) spelling questionable.  Godparents: Marcin Remp, Krystyan Goerlitz, Mrs. Justyna Schmidt.   Birth date December 9th 1866 at 11am.  Baptism July 16 1866 at Gostynin.

Confirmed June, 1882 at the age of 14.  The certificate was signed by Pastor Theodore Kunsmann, at Gombin.  Jan probably moved to Gombin just prior to his confirmation.  Records indicate that Theodor Kunzmann was Pastor in the parish of Gabin from 1876 to 1921.

US Ship Passenger List indicates he sailed from Bremen on the S.S. Brandenburg arriving at the Port of Baltimore on July 5, 1906 in good health and carrying $5.00 (the equivalent of $162 in year 2022).  His transport, and that of his family a year later, was arranged and paid for by the Lutheran Church, to which he was indebted for a number of years.  His sponsor, and the person he was to be met by, was Daniel Kreczmann (Kretchmann) who was a close friend from Poland and later, a neighbor (in Michigan.)   The destination address (of Daniel Kretchmann) was Croswell, Michigan.  John probably worked for a year in Croswell, and when his family arrived in Baltimore, moved his family to Wisconsin.  After four years in Sheboygan, then Hilbert Wisconsin, John moved his family to Saginaw, Michigan where they first rented a house on the corner of Cooper and Brenner streets, then purchased a house at 202 Brenner Street. He had a couple of horses, a black female called Nellie and a white male called Prince.  They also had a Jersey cow “Bossy” as well as chickens, a smokehouse, horse barn, cow barn, vegetable garden and a corn field.

1920 Census shows John employed as a lumber handler in a lumber yard in Saginaw. 1920 census also shows their friends, Daniel and Pauline Kretchman listed as Herchman/Kretchman.  In the 1930 census, their name is listed as Treechman.

John died in 1924 from pneumonia & lockjaw after helping to build a neighbor’s basement in cold and wet weather.  When he became ill , his kids took turns fanning him with ammonia to aid his breathing.  They squirted liquid between his teeth with a baby bottle. When John died, his body was laid out in the casket in the front parlor of the house on Brenner St.  (Standard practice then – photo exists).   Pastor Fred Harms, (pastor from July 1922 – 1938) of Zion Lutheran Church officiated at his burial at Oakwood Cemetery.
