History of Iłow
Iłow has been the parent parish of all the other Lutheran parishes in the Vistula valley. It was founded by the castle warden Adam von Losocki in 1775 and is located approximately 19 kilometers (12 mi) north-west of Sochaczew and 68 km (42 mi) west of Warsaw in the province of Mazowiecki, in Sochaczew County, Masovian Voivodeship. It is the seat of the gmina (administrative district) called Gmina Iłów. It lies approximately 19 kilometers (12 mi) north-west of Sochaczew and 68 km (42 mi) west of Warsaw. In 2020 the village has a population of 690.
The old Lutheran church, which practiced the “Augsburg Lutheran Faith”, was the main parish in the area. The ministers were famous for their extensive travel as they went out from Iłow and visited the smaller congregations all the way South to Lodz. Prior to 1775 Iłow had a plain wooden church and in 1785, the old church was repaired. By 1860 the wooden church was in such bad shape it had to be taken down and a new church in Gothic style was erected out of stone, and dedicated on the first Advent, 1861. By 1938, there were only 3,200 people living in Iłow. The language spoken was German and there was one church, one prayer house, one house for the minister, one house for the servants, and eleven cemeteries. During the WWI, the church roof was destroyed. The Germans, whose ancestors had been on the land since the first settlement wave, between 1600-1650, were forced out of Poland. (A catholic church is now where the Lutheran one was. But hidden among the trees near the Catholic Cemetery there are still some graves with German names. The Lutheran cemetery is mostly forgotten, the monuments destroyed during and after WW2.)
By 1906, our ancestors, John and Alvina Kolberg had immigrated to America. (Note: All the members of the IłowLutheran parish emigrated before 1914.)
This area historically was invaded persistently and was ruled by different sovereignties throughout the ages. For example, in the time of Caesar, it was part of Germania. In 120 A.D. it was part of Germany, not yet overrun by the Romans. In 400 A.D., it was inhabited by Carpathians and “vandals” and from about 814 A.D., in the time of Charlemagne, until about 1360, a part of what is “Poland” today, was then labeled the Kingdom of Poland. During the Renaissance, the area was once again Poland, birthplace of Copernicus. By the year 1560, “Poland” consisted of the Kingdom of Poland, parts of Russia, Lithuania, and Livonia. After the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, when most of Europe was divided into the realm of the Holy Roman Empire, Poland lost Prussia (Duchy of Prussia, 1618) to Brandenburg, and Livonia became part of the Russian Empire after the Treaty of Utrecht, 1713. In spite of the Polish revolutions of 1791, 1794 and the Decembrist Revolt of 1825, Poland all but disappeared and was absorbed by the Russian Empire becoming part of Napoleon’s Empire in 1810, at which time it was called the Grand Duchy of Warsaw (1808-1813). By 1815, after the Treaty of Vienna, it was once again called the Kingdom of Poland.
For a good look at villages and pictures of villages in the general area of Plock, including some maps: Central Vistula River Area. This website is well organized, has a map of German cemeteries, which is being added to as they are found again by volunteers and researchers. Sadly, they are unkempt with nobody to look after them. It also states that there were two waves of German settlers who came to the central Vistula area. The early wave 1600-1650 was primarily from Danzig area, and the later wave came in 1750 from Danzig, and several areas south of it – but still along the Vistula river. After WW1 there was a great push for all Germans to remove themselves from Poland leaving the graves of their families behind.

There were many Witt’s within 12 miles of each other, as shown in the Civil records of Poland – (This chart shows the most likely to be related) They tended to travel around — judging by where their children were born — sometimes traveling across the Vistula, sometimes quite a way West but always, it seems, within reach of one of the Lutheran churches or Ministering Village places. Witts can be found between 1750-1850 in German areas of Poland.
The Visla/Wistula River has always been a means of transportation and trade. The Witts always seemed to be near the river, East, West, North, South, but always near it. The flat bottom boats are typical of what they must have used in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Notes for Alvina Witt: As a young woman, Alvina worked in the house of Pastor Rudolf Schmidt. He was Pastor of the St. Peter’s Lutheran church in Iłow from 1891-1896. It was through her work as a housekeeper for him that she learned Christian prayers, songs and her strong faith in God. She was married to Jan Kolberg in St. Peters Lutheran Church in a candlelight ceremony. She wore a cream wool dress and a veil. Jan wore a suit and had a flower in his lapel. (Alvina carried dried flowers). She immigrated to U.S. in 1907. The ship was S.S. Frankfurt sailing from Bremen April 20, 1907 and arriving in the Port of Baltimore May 4, 1907 in good health, with four children and carrying $10 (the equivalent of $180 in year 2000). Her favorite bible verse was the 103rd Psalm.
Notes for John Otto Kolberg: Civil Records of the Evangelical-Augsburg Church, Parish of Gostynin. Birth Records 1826-1889 Record #299 show his birth year as 1866, parents names Gotlib Kolberg, Wilhelmina Baum (misspelled) – should be Bromke. The marriage certificate Rzeczpospolita Polska #48/1895 lists his mother’s surname as Baut (copy from 2004 – again misspelled/translated) and his birthplace as Ruszkow, Płock, Poland/Prussia. Birth certificate indicates his father Gottlieb’s age as 29, also a witness to his birth along with Marcin Remp, age 42, Krystyan Goerlitz, age 42, all living in Ruszkow, 4 miles SW of Gostynin. (Certificate from Gostynin archives.) Parents Gottlieb and Wilhelmina nee Baum (?) spelling questionable. Godparents: Marcin Remp, Krystyan Goerlitz, Mrs. Justyna Schmidt. Birth date December 9th 1866 at 11am. Baptism July 16 1866 at Gostynin. John’s natural mother died when he was 10 years old. His father remarried. (Alvina said John told her his father, Gottlieb was short, his second wife was very tall.) Confirmed June, 1882 at the age of 14. The certificate was signed by Pastor Theodore Kunsmann, at Gombin. Jan probably moved to Gombin just prior to his confirmation, as there are no birth records for him in Gombin church records. Records indicate that Theodor Kunzmann was Pastor
in the parish of Gabin from 1876 to 1921.
Notes from Alvina in 1974: There were three churches in Iłow, a Catholic Church, a Synagog and St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. Both Alvina and John worked for Pastor Rudolph Schmidt in Iłow. She was the second floor maid and John did hauling and yard work. Evidently the Pastor was rich and the house was a mansion and was surrounded by chestnut trees. The church was called Lazarus House during WW1, then went back to being St. Peter’s Lutheran church. The house Jan lived in was made of wood – and Alvina described it as a “shack”. She said most of the houses were made of wood.
US Ship Passenger List indicates he sailed from Bremen on the S.S. Brandenburg arriving at the Port of Baltimore on July 5, 1906 in good health and carrying $5.00 (the equivalent of $90 in year 2000). He was to be met by Daniel Kreczmann (Kretchmann) who was a close friend from the old country and a neighbor in Michigan. The destination address (of Daniel Kretchmann) was Croswell, Michigan. There is a book about the Lutheran Churches in Poland where a history of Gombin (Gabin) is given. Briefly translated from German, it says: Gombin (Gabin) is 17 miles southwest of Płock and, in 1939 there were about 7000 residents. In 1820, there were only 1596 residents comprised of 1215 Jews and 381 Christians (Germans and Poles). In 1829, there were 3001 residents, about 500 of whom were Germans.
In 1800, the Lutheran residents in the area owned only a prayer room. Between 1827-1829, a church and a Pastor’s house were built. In 1832, the Pastor was Heinrich Bando. He did not know how to handle people, especially those with problems. Many people moved away from Gabin to Lodz, especially the cloth makers (many of whom were Lutherans). In 1939, there were no Lutherans residing in Gabin.
He probably worked for a year in Croswell, then decided to move to Wisconsin. After four years in Sheboygan, then Hilbert Wisconsin, John moved his family to Saginaw, Michigan where they first rented a house on the corner of Cooper and Brenner streets, then purchased a house at 702 Brenner Street. He had a couple of horses, a black female called Nellie and a white male called Prince. They also had a Jersey cow “Bossy” as well as chickens, a smokehouse, horse barn, cow barn, vegetable garden and a corn field.
1920 Census shows John employed as a lumber handler in a lumber yard in Saginaw. 1920 census also shows their friends, Daniel and Pauline Kretchman listed as Herchman/Kretchman. In the 1930 census, their name is listed as Treechman.
John died in 1924 from pneumonia & lockjaw after helping to build a neighbor’s basement in cold and wet weather. When he became ill , his kids took turns fanning him with ammonia to aid his breathing. They squirted liquid between his teeth with a baby bottle. When John died, his body was laid out in the casket in the front parlor of the house on Brenner St. (Picture exists). Pastor Fred Harms, (pastor from July 1922 – 1938) of Zion Lutheran Church officiated at his burial at Oakwood Cemetery.
